Welcome

Music. What is music? It’s something you feel, something you see, while simultaneously hearing beautiful melodies strung together. Music speaks to us using poetic lyrics coalesced with sonance. We all gain something out of listening to a song; however, by diving into an analysis of the song, we can gain more.

I have a love for music because some of my fondest memories revolve around listening to music. My father and I spend a great deal of time in the car going for joyrides while listening to old rock. There are so many times in my childhood life that I can remember my father and I adventuring around our little suburban town with ice cream in our hands, while The Eagles “One of These Nights” played in the background of our conversation, while sun was being swallowed up by the horizon. Memories like these birthed my admiration for music and influenced my taste. I love classic rock because of parents playing it around the house and in the car throughout the years. But I also love pop-punk emo music because of my sister forcing me to listen to Fall Out Boy at the age of five. I also have a love for grunge and post- grunge music like Pearl Jam and Matchbox 20. As I have grown, so has my taste in music. I love alternative indie music as well because of its new age feel. And sometimes I dabble with current R&B and pop music depending on what mood I am in.

In order to truly appreciate and understand the art that a song is, I analyze the lyrics. Everyone’s interpretation of what the lyrics mean for any song is right. I find it interesting and am often curious of what someone else’s interpretation of the same lyrics might be. For that reason I am going to share my analysis of song lyrics that I enjoy. Each analysis will be my personal take on what the artist intended for the lyrics to mean, and I will also relate the lyrics to my experiences throughout life.

Music is an interpretive art; the meaning of the lyrics vary from person to person. But somehow music also holds the power to unite us. Lyrics can have obvious meaning but still each person connects the words to a moment in their life. Or sometimes you cannot relate, but you feel true empathy through the emotional truth that the lyrics expose. Music allows us to speak our emotional truths in ways that everyone understands.
