And I love you but I need another second to myself
And I’ve tried to
Ignore it every time you phone
But I never come close
I’d beg you but you know I’m never home
(I don’t think through things, I never get time) and I love you but I need another year alone
(I don’t think through things, I never get time) and I’ve tried to ignore it every time you phone
But I never come close
Title Meaning:
McCann thought of the title for the song, because he wrote the song for someone that was in a timezone 7 hours ahead of where he was. McCann gets his inspiration for his songs from the people around him that have impacted his life. “7” specially, is about a loved one that he needs space from in order to sort out his own life. The title “7” highlights the difference of two worlds clashing together. These two people are in different time zones; moreover, they are in two different places of the world. Their geographical distance is creating distance in their relationship. The simple title of “7,” which is only a number, but it still manages to point out effectively the challenge that 7 hours creates.
Larry, call a load of smoke in
I wanna lose a couple days
We’ve probably never struggled coping but
I never want to:
In an interview McCann stated that “Larry, call a load of smoke in I wanna lose a couple days” was the first thing he said to him before moving into their place together. McCann included the conversation he had with his roommate because the lyrics really come alive from using dialogue he said himself. The song’s message seems more real since he used words he had said to a friend. In the next lines, “we’ve probably never struggled coping but I never want to,” mean that McCann and his friends have never had trouble finding fun wherever they are. They are always able to cope with whatever comes their way, and he hopes it stays that way.
Promise again that I would call her
Forget the time ’cause I’m seven hours behind
It’s probably good I didn’t call, though
But I always want to:
This verse is about staying in touch with loved ones while he is traveling the world. Most likely, McCann promised his girlfriend that he would call her when he had the chance. Obviously he is far from home, since he is “seven hours behind,” the time his homeland is on. He says “it’s probably best I didn’t call, though,” to exemplify the pain that a long distance relationship comes with. He realizes that letting go might be the best option, instead of holding on to something that they both cannot have.
And I’d beg you
But you know I’m never home
And I love you but I need another year alone
And I’ve tried to
Ignore it every time you phone
But I never come close:
Now in this verse, he admits that their relationship is no longer working. People need time to focus on their own dreams and goals, and his girl back home is holding him back. The feelings he has for her are not gone, he still loves her, but he needs time alone. The life of a young band on tour forbids the members to have relationships that are stopping them from furthering their career. McCann has to do what is best for himself first.
And I don’t think through things
I never get time
‘Cause I don’t think things through:
These few lines are a paradox that emphasize the cycle of not “[thinking] through things.” The never ending cycle of rushing into something can result in a million other things that you never planned for. If you never think through things, you will have problems that need a quick solution that you cannot think too long about. If he had just thought about what he really wanted for himself, then he might have been able to avoid the problem of letting go as a whole.
Larry call a load of smoke in
I wanna disappear for days
We’ve probably never struggled sleeping but
I never want to
Promise again that I would call her
Forget the time ’cause I’m seven hours behind
It’s probably good I didn’t call though
But I always want to
And I’d beg you
But you know I’m never home
And I love you but I need another year alone
And I’ve tried to
Ignore it every time you phone
But I never come close
I don’t think through things
I never get time
‘Cause I don’t think things through
I don’t think through things
I never get time
‘Cause I don’t think things through:
The repetition of the same lyrics point out further the never ending cycle of not thinking through things. The repeated lines show how one action will cause a ripple affect that you did not ask for. The lyrics also show what McCann was thinking after he realized that he needed space. McCann had the same thoughts racing through his head. After making the mistaking of rushing into a decision, he wondered if he had made the right one. He did not want to fall into the same rabbit hole he previously had.
